Written as an antidote to the objectivist approaches to psychological treatment which were typical of the times, this book emphasizes that psychotherapy cannot legitimately be seen as a technical procedure independent of the personal knowledge and characteristics of those who carry it out. It is heavily influenced by existential and phenomenological thought.
